JAXA/NASA/ESA Hinode - Solar Eclipse, November 25, 2011
Unless you're a penguin, you probably didn't see the solar eclipse that occurred last week over Antarctica and portions of South Africa and New Zealand. Fortunately, X-Ray Telescope on Hinode was on the job to capture this spectacular footage of the event. And as a bonus resulting from Hinode's orbital mechanics, three eclipses are observed for every one seen from the ground! This was the last solar eclipse of 2011; the next one won't occur for another six months on May 20th, 2012. Hinode is led by the Jaxa - Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in collaboration with National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and the European Space Agency. Hinode is a Japanese mission developed, launched and operated by ISAS/JAXA, in partnership with NAOJ, NASA and STFC (UK). Additional operational support is provided by ESA and and NSC (Norway).
